When I was in my early teens, I took an advanced origami course at the adult night school offered by a local college. We used what was, at the time, considered standard origami paper, perfectly square pieces colored on one side with a nice smooth hand, but not glossy. I enjoyed it then, but haven't really thought much about it since, until I saw this book while browsing at my favorite Marketplace.I think what intrigued me the most was the question of how the author would present her instructions, followed closely by the question of whether the designs would actually work. Could I honestly accomplish designs as featured on the cover, a complex bow, just by reading a manual? I suppose I could have just taken a Look Inside, since Amazon features that function for this title, but I didn't. I just went for it, probably because of the reasonable price.I am so glad that I bought this book! Sometimes it's the little things in life that have the most potential to be uplifting. To me, surprising the other members of my family with the design from the cover of this book is just one of those little things that has brought a few giggles and a little extra joy to the day.Today I made my very first (ever) fancy on-the-roll toilet paper origami design from the book. I chose the cover picture, the fancy bow that resembles the type usually made of ribbon and used to adorn little girls' locks or a fabulously wrapped gift. The instructions were simple, easy to follow, and worked well to allow me to create a design identical to the one pictured. And, I got it right on the first try, despite a bit of initial skepticism.The book has photographs that diagram each and every preparatory tear and fold in a detailed but straightforward manner for each of the thirty-one designs. Each of the photographic diagrams is captioned with brief text that clarifies the step illustrated. Most of the designs are meant to remain attached to the roll, while it hangs in the standard horizontal position on the holder. But if you have a vertical holder or want to spruce up the extra roll that stands vertically, have no fear. This book features a few designs specifically tailored for a vertical roll, too. Also, for my first attempt, I purposely chose one of the more challenging designs, with a greater number of steps involved, with this review in mind. I figured that if I could pull off that bow quickly and easily without any previous toilet paper origami experience, then I could report that the directions in the book are indeed all that. And they are.Additionally, this book contains just a few designs that require or suggest additional materials (such as tape or home made cardboard guides) or items that are incorporated into the design (such as tiny twigs used as reindeer antlers). Most of the designs require only toilet paper, but the ones that involve additional materials clearly state so at the beginning of their directions.Part of the reason I am so pleasantly surprised by the ability of the author to present such easy to follow instructions in her pictorials is that my only other experience was that course I took. At that time, though there was a book, all the designs were learned by attempting them face-to-face with the instructor who was providing a live example of his verbal instructions, and even that was challenging! The designs then had to be practiced for perfection and committed to memory, as I found the book to be of little instructional value.Kudos to Ms. Wright for her mad instructional skills, and her quirky hobby that provides for many smiles and a little added joy to the day.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to go just a little over the top, when home making, or to anyone expecting house guests or throwing a party. Heck, these designs might even make a difference when staging one's home for realty purposes. One never knows how much of a difference a little touch that brings a smile can effect another's day, and I like to think it's sizeable.
